Why Houseplants Get Brown Tips

Hello, I just purchased this new plant but the store could not tell me what type of plant it is. Could you help me identify this plant so that I can know how to properly care for it? For example, the tips of some of the leaves are brown – should I remove the brown tips? Thank you.

Hi Anne Marie,

Green and white striped Dracaena Warnekii
Dracaena Warnekii

Your plant is a Dracaena Warnekii if the leaf edges are white and a Dracaena Lemon lime if the edges are yellow. It’s hard to tell from the picture exactly what the leaf variation is. Dracaenas get brown tips from too much plant food, being watered with water that has passed through a softener (too salty), or being watered with water that contains too many chemicals such as fluoride and chlorine. You can read more about dracaenas in the Popular Houseplant section of the website.
