What is this colorful houseplant?

I bought this plant earlier this evening and it did not come with the little identifying tag, which tells what kind of conditions it needs to thrive, etc. of course it was the last one! I just liked the colors , which are green and purple. I know this is not a good reason to buy a plant, but I would like to know what it is and how to care for it. Can you help?

Hi Raven,

Your plant is a type of Maranta called a Prayer Plant. The large patterned leaves of a Prayer Plant, with hues of red, green, brown, and cream, lift up and fold together each evening as though praying and open again the next morning. Although the flowers of a Prayer Plant are small and insignificant, the patches of color on the leaves of a Prayer Plant get darker and more vibrant as the plant gets older. A Prayer Plant requires a warm, humid environment in order to grow well. You can read all my plant care tips for a Prayer Plant in the Popular HousePlant section of the website. The picture is of a different variety of Prayer Plant (see below) but the care is the same.
