Hi Janet,

Your plant is a type of bromeliad called an Aechmea. A few important things to know:

A bromeliad  blooms once indoors, then it’s necessary to start a new plant using offsetsHouseplant offsets, or pups as they are sometimes called, are the baby plants that form at the base of certain houseplants. Plant offsets can be used to easily propagate new plants. Wait until the plant offsets have grown at least several inches, then gently detach them from the "mother"plant. Hopefully the plant offsets will have a few roots of their own at this point. Plant the offsets in a small container and keep the plant barely moist but never soggy at all times. from the original plant.

Bromeliad blooms last longer in cool rooms with medium light. Allow soil to dry out before watering.

You can read all my care tips for a bromeliad in the Popular Houseplant section of the website. The picture is of a different variety, but the care is the same.
