How to Propagate Houseplants Using Stem Cuttings

Broke a branch off of this palm and want to know if it’s possible to root it and if so how. And is it a palm or dragon plant? Thank you for any help Mike

Hi Mike,

Thin green leaves on Dracaena marginata
Dracaena Marginata

It’s not a palm. It’s a dracaena marginata, often called a Dragon Plant. Dracaena Marginata housePlants are propagated by stem cuttings.  Use a sharp, clean scissors or razor blade to cut the broken stalk into a 5”-7” pieces. Remove any leaves from the bottom 1/3 of the sections. Dip the cut end of the stem into a small amount of Rooting Hormone that contains a Fungicide. Plant the stem in moist potting soil. Cover the pot with clear plastic to increase the humidity and prevent the soil from drying out. Check the plant every few days to be sure the soil stays moist. Tug on the stem cuttings after a few weeks, if there is resistance, roots have developed, the plastic can be removed, and the propagation was successful. You can also plant the stalk sections directly back into the existing pot. Please let me know if any of this is unclear.
