How to Propagate and Prune a TOO Tall Rubber Tree Plant

I do not know the name of the plant I have had for approximately 13 years. I got it from a dish garden planter from my father in-laws funeral. It is growing too tall to keep in my front window and I would like to know if there is something I can do to stop the height but not kill the plant.

Hi Cynthia,

Your plant is a variegated Rubber Tree Plant. These plants are propagated using Stem cuttings or air layering.  Click the links to read how to do it.

You can cut anywhere along the stem line. New growth develops directly below the cut in the stem and  the original plant becomes bushier.

You can read all my care tips on how to grow a Rubber Tree plant in the Popular Houseplant section of the website. The picture is of a different variety, but the care is the same.

These plants are considered poisonous and should be kept away from pets and children. Read more about common houseplants that are poisonous in Don’t Feed Me To Your Cat! A Guide to Poisonous Houseplants.
