What is this plant? Clivia Plant

Hi I recently received a plant which my neighbour gave me to repot and keep half she had it for 15 years and now is flowering and neither one of us knows what it is. She thought it was a type of lily and I thought it looked like a crocus flower. Thankfully. Mike

Hi Mike,

Your plant is called a Clivia plant, sometimes referred to as a Kaffir Lily. Here is a picture of one in full bloom.

Clivia Plants bloom for about 4 weeks during the late spring and early summer when the weather is warm and the days are long. Clivias are large plants that can grow 2-3 feet tall and almost as wide. Planting a Clivia Plant in a heavy clay or ceramic pot prevents it from tipping over. The older a Clivia plant gets the more beautiful it becomes.
