How to Care for a Dracaena Reflexa (Pleomele)

Hi Judy,
I found this plant at my church that has been neglected for a very long time. I would like to see if I can help it and give it some more TLC. It is very root bound and the leaves are a bit sparse. My first plan is to re-pot it and after a month to fertilize it.

Am I correct in thinking that it is a Dracaena Song Of India?

I would like to shorten it and make it a bit more compact. I’ve read that I can start cutting off 12 inches on each branch and it will re-grow itself, like other Dracaena. Is this true? What is the best way to help revitalize this plant?

Thank you for your help!
I really appreciate your website and use it all the time!

Sincerely,

Laura Page

Hi Laura,

Your plant is a Dracaena Reflexa or Pleomele. The variegated version is called Song of India. This plant loves to be pruned and root bound in a small pot. If you do move it to a larger pot, be sure it is just a few inches wider and a few inches taller. Never feed a housePlant for at least 6 weeks after re-potting it.
