Are These Houseplants Safe for Cats?

My boyfriend’s mom gave me some plants the other day and I want to make sure I have them all identified for the safety of my cats and so I know how to care for them properly. Thanks!

Hi,

The first picture looks like an African Violet. An African Violet is a non-poisonous houseplant. The second plant like a type of Sansevieria (Snake Plant). This plant is considered poisonous and could cause problems for your cat. The third plant is a kalanchoe which is a non-poisonous houseplant. You can read more about these plants in the Popular HousePlant section of the website. Cats have a delicate digestive system, so I would recommend keeping all houseplants away from them. Try putting the skin from a lemon or lime in the soil or a few camphor balls. This usually helps keep cats away from plants.

You can read all about the most common houseplants that are poisonous to pets and small children in my book: Don’t Feed Me to Your Cat, A Guide to Poisonous Houseplants.
