Mystery HousePlant: Chlorophytum orchidastrum “Fireflash

Hi, I received this plant as a raffle prize at an Earth Day celebration. There’s no tag identifying it. I’d like to know what it is and how to care for it. I am hoping to keep it as an indoor plant, if it would do well inside. Thanks!

Hi Erin,

Your plant is called a Chlorophytum orchidastrum “Fireflash” and, if you believe it, it is a relative of the Spider Plant. It is an excellent houseplant. Here are some care instructions:

Light: Can handle most lighting conditions

Water: Keep the soil barely moist but not soggy. Never allow the soil to totally dry out. Water less in the winter

Fertilizer: Feed every two weeks during the spring and summer. Always dilute the food to 1/2 the recommended strength. Feed monthly in the Fall and never in the winter.

Temperature: normal room temperature
