Hi Ronnie,

I am so sorry for your loss and will try to help you care for your sister’s plant.

Pink and green Chinese Evergreen

Chinese Evergreen
“Siam Aurora”

Your plant is a type of Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema). All of the many Chinese Evergreen plant varieties have long, shiny, leathery leaves with unique patterns of green, gray, pink, red, and cream. NASA lists the Chinese Evergreen as one of its top ten plants to clean the air of harmful toxins.

There are so many new hybrids with pink in the leaves, that it’s a little hard to tell your exact variety from this picture, perhaps a “Pink Sapphire” or “ Pink Dalmatian.”  This is a  poisonous houseplant so please keep it away from small children and pets.

There are complete care instructions on how to care for a Chinese Evergreen Plant in the Popular HousePlant section of the website. The picture is of a different variety but the care is practically the same. The main difference is that varieties that have pink in the leaves need bright indirect lightVery few houseplants should be placed in direct sun. High light refers only to bright indirect light since direct sun often burns the leaves of indoor houseplants. An area that is too hot and dry encourages Spider Mites and causes blooms to quickly fade. A northern exposure really doesn't provide enough light for high light plants. These plants need to be placed directly in front of an east-facing window, within 1-3 feet of a west-facing window, and within 5 ft. of a south facing window. A high light area has over 300 ft. candles of light. to maintain the pink color. Click the link below to see the care guide.
