Celosia Plant Identification and Care

Hello Judy!
Can you please identify this flower/plant? It was given to me by a lady in town. I have grown fond of it and would like to invest in its proper care. The flower’s pedals are soft and pinkish red but look similar to wheat. The stem is thick and red.
Thank you so much!

Hi Pammy,

The picture looks like a plant called a Celosia, also called a Flamingo Cockscomb.

This is usually an outdoor annual plant because it doesn’t like cold weather and quickly dies when temperatures go below freezing. It can grow well outdoors in zones 10 and 11. They are hard to keep alive indoors because they need least five hours of sunshine every day. Here are some tips on Celosia plant care and identification. Celosia plants are easy to grow. Keep the soil barely moist at all times. If the plant gets too dry, the flowers are very small.  Fertilize with a balanced, water soluble plant food about every 3-4 weeks when the plant is actively growing. Too much plant food is worse than too little. If aphids or spider mites attack the plant, spray with Neem Oil. Like all flowering plants, remove the dead flowers as soon as they appear.
