Rescued plant is a Sweet Potato Vine

This little beauty was left behind in a rental. We have been able to save it and would like to know what it is so that we can care for it properly. Thanks

Hi Jerry,

Your plant is a BlackieSweet Potato Vine – Ipomoea batatas. It’s in all of the Garden Stores this time of year. An ornamental Sweet Potato Vine is a fast growing easy care plant that loves lots of bright lightVery few houseplants should be placed in direct sun. High light refers only to bright indirect light since direct sun often burns the leaves of indoor houseplants. An area that is too hot and dry encourages Spider Mites and causes blooms to quickly fade. A northern exposure really doesn't provide enough light for high light plants. These plants need to be placed directly in front of an east-facing window, within 1-3 feet of a west-facing window, and within 5 ft. of a south facing window. A high light area has over 300 ft. candles of light.. Although drought resistant, a Sweet Potato Vine plant will droop when it needs water. It’s great as a filler in hanging baskets or as mass plantings in your garden. The Sweet Potato Vine plant has beautiful dark purple almost black leaves, and the “Blackie” variety even has some neat flowers.
