I have a very hearty money tree that I would like to keep small. It is currently 27″ tall. I purchased this plant at approximately 10″ tall. Can I safely cut the root system and take branch cuttingsThis method of propagation consists of taking a piece of a plant and using it to grow a new plant. STEM CUTTINGS is the most common technique. Use a sharp clean scissors or razor blade to cut a 3”-5” piece from the end of a healthy stem just below a leaf node. A node is where a leaf joins the stem. Remove leaves from the bottom 1/3 of the stem. Dip the cut end of the stem in rooting hormone that contains a fungicide. Plant the stem section in moist potting soil. Cover the pot with clear plastic to increase the humidity and prevent the soil from drying out. Check the plant every few days to be sure the soil stays moist. Tug on the stem cuttings after a few weeks; if there is resistance, the plastic can be removed. LEAF CUTTINGS is similar to stem cuttings except a leaf is used in place of the stem. Remove a mature healthy leaf from an actively growing stem. Dip the cut end of the leaf into a rooting powder or liquid. Plant the bottom 1/3 of the leaf in soil. Long leaves, like those of a Snake Plant, can be cut into sections. New plants form around the base of the mature leaf. CANE CUTTINGS are used when a plant has bare canes with no leaves. Cut a piece of cane into 3”-4” sections. Each section must have one or two nodes. Dust the cut ends with a rooting solution. Lay the sections horizontally in soil with the node facing up and the bottom side of the cane in the soil. An alternative cane method is to plant the sections vertically. BRANCH CUTTINGS are used for trees with long woody branches. Cut off a 10”-12” healthy branch, about 1/4" thick, that has 4-6 nodes. Remove any side branches and all but 2 or 3 of the leaves at the top. Plant the branch in sterile sand or perlite. Cover the pot with plastic, keep the soil moist, and place it in a warm bright location. to minimize its height growth?
The best way to keep a Money Tree small is to keep it in a small pot which prevents the roots from growing too large. That said, you can certainly take stem and root cuttings which can be used to propagate a new Pachira Aquatica, (Money Tree). For the best results, use a sharp knife dipped in alcohol to cut off a young branch or root section.
