How to Keep Cats Off Of House Plants

Hello, Judy! My husband and I got this tree on clearance, but it had no tag… I was wondering if you could tell me the name of it? Also, as you can tell by the dirt on the floor, my cat loves to play in it. Is there anything I can do to prevent him from playing in the dirt?

Hi Vanessa,

Your plant is a Dracaena. If the leaves are solid green, it’s a Dracaena Janet Craig. If there is a yellow stripe in the leaves it is a Dracaena Corn plant. There are care instructions for both ofthese house plants in the Popular HousePlant Sectionof the website. A couple of ways to keep cats off of your plants:place oranges and lemons on the soil. Cats do not like citrus Place moth balls on the soil. This works well, but if a cat eats a moth ball it may make her sick. You can also spray a product like Hot Pepper Wax of the soil. This has the double benefit of getting rid of plants pests in a non-toxic way and keeping your cat away.
