Help. Plant dying!

The leaves keep turning yellow then brown and dying. When I brought it home it was standing in an inch of water so I dumped the water to help it dry up some. It didn’t seem to help. It’s still doing the same thing. How do I keep it from dying and what kind of plant is this?

Hi Lacy,

Yellow and green Dracaena sanderiana
Dracaena Sanderiana

Your plant looks like a Dracaena sanderiana, but if you could email a close up of an entire leaf I could be more certain. This is a “stalk” plant so losing its bottom leaves is usual. You were right in allowing the plant to dry out. It sound like the place where you bought the plant over- watered and caused some root damage. Any chance you could return the plant and get your money back??

The container in which the it is planted must have drip holes in the bottom so excess water can drain out. Dracaenas should never sit in water. You can find all my care tips for this plant in the Popular Houseplant section of the website. The picture is of a different variety (dracaena lemon lime) but the care is the same.
